During the School of Worship sponsored by Chorus Church last week, one of the speakers is a worship leader from a sister church … a guy who has quite the reputation for effects. He can get sounds from his guitar that absolutely amaze me, all from various effects peddles and combinations and permutations (just thought I’d [...] -

Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Chorus Church hosted our second “School of Worship.” Two hours (theoretically) Thursday and Friday nights and most of the day Saturday, concluding with a concert that evening. I spoke at the leader’s luncheon Saturday. I’ve been reading Frank Viola’s book, Pagan Christianity , in which he argues that most of what we [...]

Last Sunday I filled in for our worship leader, meaning I stayed on for both services. Usually when I am involved in the praise team, I will go outside during second service and read my Bible (when I want to look holy and pious), talk with a friend (usually another team member), play games on my [...] -

Saturday we had friends over from Long Beach and while eating dinner, we were barraged by the “singing” of a dove. Very loudly and constantly. I wondered how a bird could sing that much for that length of time. Do doves ever have throat issues? Lose their voice? Sing a different song? To add to [...]

You’ll be missed. Sorry to hear about all of this, but you and Doris certainly have about all you can handle right now.

Steven Walker has been visiting us from Florida. Great kid. Always a joy to be around … now that he’s out of high school!
Played in praise band with us Sunday, which was a treat for me and the Chorus church. Planned on catching a ballgame last night, but the temps were triple digit [...] -

While employed as a preacher, I lived from Sunday to Sunday, knowing every weekend I had to be ready for that one day a week I worked. One person observed that for preachers, Sunday was like giving birth to your latest child, only to discover on Monday morning that you were pregnant again! For just [...]

I am speaking at a luncheon for a “School of Worship” three day training program with our church next weekend. My task: Lead a discussion with worship leaders on the topic of relationship and conflict resolution. The people putting this together seem to think I might have some valuable insight as I’ve been on the [...]

The Conflict . . . Josh called Sunday to ask if we would watch the twins while he, Heather, and Jackson went to San Diego to look for a table for her craft room. Jackson is usually good for a trip such as that. And with three at that age, taking any one of them out [...]

Sunday afternoon, the Mrs. and I were sitting out on the front porch (something I seldom do) enjoying the wonderful temperature (around 80) and a cool, refreshing breeze. I had just finished “tweaking” the security door I’d installed a few weeks ago and she had been trimming some of the plants along the side yard [...]

Even if the day was good in every other way, that kind of news on the medical front will take everything out of you.

We can blame Twitter for this. Some of my better friends (and favorite bloggers) have dropped out. Those remaining seem to blog less and less and comment less frequently, myself included. But don’t give up … I enjoy your blog!! You write and I’ll read / comment. Deal?

Walking Alone at Eve … what a beautiful song! Haven’t heard it in years, but always one of my favorites and, yes, what a sense of calm that song brings.

Last Friday I went to Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office to pick up a case. Thinking they release the same hours (Noon ~ 5:00pm) as all the other coroner offices around us (at least four different counties), I got there about 1:30. For the record, in the past, LA released from 12:00 ~ 5:00pm. And [...]

I’ve seen the Ronco infomercials … those whole chickens cooking in his rotisserie oven (available with easy monthly payments!). Golden brown. Dripping with succulent juices. I wanted so much to order that puppy and try my hand at those mouth-watering recipes. After all, if you believe the hype and pitch of the infomercials, you could not [...]

Last week I told my wife I did not like the person I am becoming. She asked what I meant and I told her too often I was just a crotchety, 57-year-old, old man. I seem to lose my patience (what little I have) with people I love. I snap back. I hear things the wrong [...]

I’d like a few days off from our funeral home! A friend gave me enough sod this afternoon to re-sod my back yard, but I don’t have time to do it. Hopefully if I can keep it watered it will stay good until the weekend.

We went to a not-so-small group Bible study last Friday, along with about 40 other people to have dinner together and then start through Francis Chan’s video teaching on the Holy Spirit. Chan is an amazingly gifted communicator. I’ve heard him speak and I’ve read his book, Crazy Love (an excellent read). He is perhaps the most [...]
